A Different Brazil

A weekend a few weekends ago we explored colonial Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais. First destination was Ouro Branco (White Gold). We arrived late evening to our fazenda, pitch black, had dinner and a drink or two. Went straight to bed. (Fazendas are most often old coffee plantations with a European master). The following morning we woke up to a beautiful nature, colonial atmosphere and a sunny breakfast. After a relaxing horse back ride we prepared for our second destination; Ouro Preto (correct, Black Gold). This town is historically significant for its gold mining and for Brazil's first independence movement. One could feel the historic venues...colonial superiority, slaves, chains, rice & beans, misery and injustice. Somehow that created a dull atmosphere of this picturesque town. We wrote our mandatory postcards and enjoyed an afternoon drink in the Oscar Niemeyer designed Grand Hotel. Our third and last stop was Tiradentes (Tooth Puller). Also a colonial town but much more lively and colorful. The lady, with the white hairnet, served the best breakfast during our historical weekend!
